Wearing a new hairstyle can be a momentous occasion for many reasons. Depending on the style you choose and how different it is from your current style, it may significantly change your appearance. When picking a new hairstyle be sure to consider the shape of your face.

Face Shapes and Hairstyles

There are six basic shapes of human faces. Each shape has hairstyles that are attractive and hairstyles that do not compliment them. The six shapes are:

Oval: If you are lucky enough to have an oval shaped face there is virtually no hairstyle you cannot pull off. Your choice is limited solely to your own preferences. Although people with oval facial shapes can wear any style, they look even better with slicked back styles that really show off the face.

Rectangular: This facial shape looks best with shorter to mid-length hairstyles. Layered styles also help to contrast the shape of the face and are very attractive. Avoid longer styles as they will draw down the angularity of a rectangular shaped face.

Round: Keep hair short and if possible with more volume at the top. This will add length to the face and give it a more oval appearance. Avoid hairstyles that are teased up high or cuts that have a lot of volume at the sides.

Square: This is another facial shape that looks best with shorter cuts. Longer hair will draw attention to the jaw line.

Heart: This is a facial shape that looks best with long hairstyles. Longer hair draws attention away from the fuller top of the face. Avoid short cuts or cuts that have a lot of volume on top of the head.

Triangular: This shape looks best with shorter hair as it draws attention away from the jaw line.

Diamond: This shape is closest to the oval shape and also wears well with just about any style chosen. The wider cheekbones of the diamond shaped face can prove problematic with styles that have a lot of side volume, so try to keep longer cuts slick and shorter cuts more focused on the top.

It is always best to consult a well-qualified hairdresser when planning a new hairstyle. Their expertise can guide you in choosing styles that will compliment your features. With any choice of new hairstyle there will be a period of adjustment. Your looks will change and that might, at first, make you uncertain about your choice. Give it a little time and you will soon know if you chose wisely, based on the shape of your face. Once you are used to your new style, it is more than likely that you will look and feel fantastic!

Maintaining Your Hairstyle

Every hairstyle takes maintenance but the choices you make should take into consideration your lifestyle. If you have a lot of time to prepare your hair every morning, or before you go out, then styles that require a lot of work will be fine. However, if you are a ‘wash and wear’ type of individual, stay away from cuts that require a great deal of daily work to keep them looking good.

Depending on the type of cut you will need to have it re-styled every four to eight weeks to keep it looking fresh. Longer cuts will tend to stay looking good for the longest period of time in between stylings. Your professional hairstylist will be able to advise you on how often your new style needs to be trimmed in order to keep it looking its best.
